Designed to be an infant's first introduction to water adjustment with an emphasis on parent participation / education as well as safety skills and fun. One child per adult.


For preschool children who are ready to attend class on their own. Focus on swim readiness skills and safety.


For children over 5 yrs old beginning with little or no formal swim instruction. Class emphasis on breath control, submerging, front & back floats to intro to treading and freestyle and backstroke.


For children over 5 yrs old with a good water skills foundation. Students will go from freestyle and backstroke review to butterfly, followed by breaststroke with skills for swim team.


For adults over 16 yrs old at any stage from beginning water adjustment to stroke refinement.

Prerequisite Skills:

Student ages 6 months to 3 years with in water parent participation.

Prerequisite Skills:

Star Tots - Level 1: Student can enter water independently.

Star Tots - Level 2: Student can jump in, submerge, turn around, grab wall and pull up with help.

Star Tots - Level 3: Student can submerge off wall unassisted, come to surface and get a breath in a vertical or horizontal position.

Prerequisite Skills:

Swim School-Level 1: Student can enter water independently.

Swim School-Level 2: Student can jump in, go underwater, come to surface, take a breath & roll on back for 5 seconds.

Swim School-Level 3: Student can jump in, come up for air, kick and pull 10 feet on front or back, change direction & return to side.

Prerequisite Skills:

Stroke School-L1: Student can tread water 15 sec., side glide & freestyle swim 30 ft. w/ breathe pattern

Stroke School-L2: Student can swim 30 ft. freestyle w/ breathing and 30 ft. backstroke.

Stroke School-L3: Student can swim 4 strokes butterfly with one breath to pool length freestyle.

Prerequisite Skills:

Adult-Beginners: Student can enter water independently.

Adult -Stroke School: Student can tread water 15 sec., side glide & freestyle swim 30 ft. w/ breathe pattern.


Private Lessons are available for all ages and levels. Private lessons are $95 for four (4) 30 minute sessions. Additional siblings, using the same instructor, are $10 off. To inquire or for more information call The Wave Office at (760) 940-9283 (WAVE).

How much do the classes cost?

Swim lessons are $55 per student, per session. Each session includes 4 lessons. Students will also receive a FREE Wave Waterpark ticket ($21.95 value) at the end of the class!

When are classes available?

Classes begin in April and run through September.

What days are classes on?

Classes typically run Monday through Thursdays in single week sessions - 4 classes per session. We do have three sessions of Saturday only classes beginning in mid-June. See our Swim Lesson Schedule by clicking the link at the top of this page.

How do I know which level to register for?

The level descriptions and prerequisites listed above can help determine which level a student should be placed in, or if you are having difficulty, you may call our office to have a knowledgeable staff member assist you.

How do I register?

You may register in person at The Wave Office or over the phone by calling (760) 940-9283 (WAVE).

What skills are taught at each level?

Each level of the Starfish Swimming® Program has a specific stage focus with specific objectives. Different levels are achieved by completing benchmark skills. At each level there is a benchmark safety skill and a benchmark swimming skill to work towards. More information about each level can be see in the Swim Lesson Parent Handbook here.

What swim program do you use?

The Wave is an independent and authorized provider of the Starfish Swimming® Program. The Starfish Swimming® Program is a nationally recognized swim instruction program developed by the Starfish Aquatics Institute.

What is the student / instructor ratio?

The pre-school levels (Star Tots) are designed to have 1:6 instructor ratio. Swim School, Stroke School and Adult levels are designed to have a 1:8 instructor ratio. Parent participation classes (Star Babies) have a 1:10 ratio.

Can parents / guardians watch the lessons?

Yes! Spectators may watch from designated areas. If your child is distracted by your presence the instructor may ask you to move farther away. Please let the instructors teach without interruption during the time your child is here. Additional children that are not in lessons will need to be monitored closely by a parent / guardian and kept within arms reach at all times.

What qualifications do the instructors have?

All instructors are Starfish Swimming Instructors and StarGuard licensed Lifeguards (includes First Aid, CPR, AED, and oxygen use). In addition, the instructors have completed The Wave’s Instructor Training Course.

What happens if there is a Holiday during a scheduled swim lesson class?

Classes will continue to run on weeks and days with scheduled Holidays (ex. Memorial Day & 4th of July). Please plan accordingly!

What do I do when I have a swim lesson related concern?

If you or your child experiences a problem or has a concern, please let us know! Feel free to stop us as we are walking around or you can leave a note at the front office for the Swim Lesson Coordinator to contact you. We are here to help you in any way we can and to make sure you have a quality swim lesson experience.

What is the swim lesson cancellation / refund policy?

When the Wave cancels a program, participants or payees shall be eligible for a full refund without processing fee or penalty.  Programs do have class minimums to operate and may be cancelled and rescheduled due to severe weather or other unplanned reasons at the discretion of the Manager on Duty.  Classes will continue in the rain and other mild conditions.    

When registrants request a refund prior to the second scheduled class, a refund will be granted minus a cancellation processing fee of $5, and the prorated fee for the first class (total class fee divided by number of classes). Beginning on the second-class date, no refunds will be given.

Registrants may request a transfer prior to the scheduled program, if a transfer is made to a class/program with a difference in fees, then the payment is due immediately at the time of the transfer. When registrants request a transfer prior to the second scheduled class, a transfer credit will be granted minus the prorated fee of the attended class, if a transfer is made to a class/program with a difference in fees, then payment is due immediately at that time. Beginning on the second-class date, no transfers will be granted. All transfer credits must be used within 30 days or will expire. 

If registrants fail to attend a program after it begins, they are not entitled to a refund or transfer.

Refunds may take up to 2 weeks to process depending on payment type.
