SWIM LESSON LEVELS

 

SWIM LESSON F.A.Q.

POLLIWOG & PARENT (6mo-2 years)

Emphasis on water adjustment, bubble blowing, water holds, leg and arm action. All skills require adult in water participation.

 

When are classes available?

Classes run from the beginning of April through mid October. See our 2012 Swim Lesson Schedule by clicking the link at the top of this page.

What days are classes on?

Classes typically run Monday through Thursdays in single week sessions - 4 classes per session. We do have two sessions of Saturday only classes beginning in mid-June. See our 2012 Swim Lesson Schedule by clicking the link at the top of this page.

How much do the classes cost?

Swim lessons are $45 per student, per session. Each session includes 4 lessons. Students will also receive a FREE Wave Waterpark ticket ($16.95 value) at the end of the class!

How do I know which level to register for?

The level descriptions listed to the left can help determine which level a student should be placed in, or if you are having difficulty, you may call our office to have a knowledgeable staff member assist you or to schedule a “test out” with a swim instructor.

How do I register?

You may register in person at The Wave Office or over the phone by calling (760) 940-WAVE.

What is the student / instructor ratio?

The beginner levels (Guppy, Starfish, Seahorses) are designed to have 1:6 instructor ratio. All other levels are designed to have a 1:8 instructor ratio.

Can parents / guardians watch the lessons?

Yes! Spectators may watch from designated areas. If your child is distracted by your presence the instructor may ask you to move farther away. Please let the instructors teach without interruption during the time your child is here. Additional children that are not in lessons will need to be monitored closely by a parent / guardian and kept within arms reach at all times.

What qualifications do the instructors have?

All instructors are Ellis & Associates Lifeguard licensed (includes First Aid, CPR, AED, and oxygen use). In addition, the instructors are also Jeff Ellis Swimming Instructors and have completed The Wave’s Instructor Training Course.

What happens if there is a Holiday during a scheduled swim lesson class?

Classes will continue to run on weeks and days with scheduled Holidays (ex. Memorial Day & 4th of July). Please plan accourdingly!

What do I do when I have a swim lesson related concern?

If you or your child experiences a problem or has a concern, please let us know! Feel free to stop us as we are walking around or you can leave a note at the front office for the Swim Lesson Coordinator to contact you. We are here to help you in any way we can and to make sure you have a quality swim lesson experience.

GUPPIES - LEVEL P1 (3-5 years)

Emphasis on water entries, blowing bubbles, bouncing and movement, submersion of face, front & back floating, basic kicks and jumps from the side.

 

STARFISH - LEVEL P2 (3-5 years)

Emphasis on water entries, bouncing, submersion, object retrieval, floating with face in and basic kicks and arm movements. Students should have previously mastered Level 1 skills.

 

SEAHORSES - LEVEL P3 (3-5 years)

Emphasis on breath control, front float with face in without assistance, back float with limited assistance, front arms with face in and backstroke arms. Students should have previously mastered Level 2 skills.

 

GOLDFISH - LEVEL 1 (5+ years)

Emphasis on breath control, object retrieval, submersion of body, front and back floats, basic kicks, freestyle arms, backstroke arms, front & back glides.

 

SEA TURTLES - LEVEL 2 (5+ years)

Emphasis on breath control, front and back floats for 10 seconds, basic kicks 25 yards, freestyle with side breathing intro, backstroke 15 yards, front and back glide with chest out.

 

EELS - Level 3 (5+ years)

Emphasis on breath control, front and back floats for 20 seconds, treading water 20 seconds, freestyle kick on front and back, breaststroke kick, backstroke, elementary backstroke 15 yards, breaststroke arms15 yards, glides into strokes.

 

SEA LIONS - Level 4 (5+ years)

Emphasis on surface dives, underwater swimming, breath control, floats for 30 seconds, treading water 30 seconds, freestyle & breaststroke kick 25 yards, freestyle with side breathing 50 yards, backstroke & elementary backstroke 25 yards, butterfly 15 yards.

 

DOLPHINS - Level 5 (5+ years)

Emphasis on floats 60 seconds, freestyle kicks 50 yards, freestyle stroke 100 yards, backstroke 50 yards, elementary backstroke 25 yards, breaststroke & sidestroke 50 yards, butterfly 25 yards, flip turns, underwater pull outs, pace clock, circle swimming.

 

ADULT - Level A (all ages)

Adult beginning and intermediate swimmers. Skill level will vary. Focus on water entry, water adjustment, floats, glides, and stroke development.
